Palin's Fashion Failins

***Remember reader its just an opinion and I am entitled to it. PS I love your top***

I am a Fashionista from birth. Watching My mom and Grandmother get dressed was always a treat. Gucci, Bottega Venetta, Moschino, Donna Karen, Prada, Calvin Klien and a host of other amazing were some of my first words, " Buy me, Gimme" were a couple of my first statements. Historically speaking I was raised in a boutique that sells mink and gems and stuff. My fashion standards are pretty normal. I own Gucci, Moschino, Danna Karan, Eileen Fisher, Pucci, YSL, Louis Vuitton, Free clothes from mom's shop, jewelry I design and sell and TONS of stuff from Target. Mix it up look CURRENT. That's what style is. I AM NOT BRAGGING JUST STATING FACTS OF MY REALITY. I COULD BE YOUR "TWILIGHT ZONE"

When I hear, rather read, that Sarah Palin is a Fashionista I about choke. IN WHAT DEMENSION!!!
These are the things I noticed about her fashion and I am sure a trillion and one ( of course a I must single myself out to be the one) others agree with me. Unless you live in some tiny ass town where you can't get a current issue of Vogue and Cosmo Girl (or have no stores or TV) there is no reason to want to look like Sarah Palin. Sure she is attractive but as someone who styles people and designs for a living, she could look so much more current and progressive.

Here are my gripes about her wardrobe to nowhere...

. Her hair looks like the Rachel. Umm so 15 years ago.
. Her kids wear ill fitting sacks. Sheesh.
. In People mag her shoes and suit just don't work. Cindy and he daughter looks very nice.
. The glasses just plain ewww. She needs contacts.
. The front poufy hump is very played (in the manner the Palin girls wear it) like the Posh, and the Soccer mom bob with wings. Thanks Sarah for that lol.
. Palin and simple, excuse me plain and simple she just does not have personal style that strikes me as someone I would want to look like.

The coup de gras of this whole Fashionista File was opening US Weekly with her on the cover and seeing TWO pages of Michelle Obama looking amazing. If I were that sort of woman ( a working, political, mom, wife type) I would want to look like that Obama.

Peek-A-Boo

Ok. Cheryl I am posting the tag thing very soon. You are my one reader so I can send you a personal note on my blog. ha ha. BTW when is our date?

I have been crazy busy. New job. Watching my goals come into fruition. A million things. So I will update soon.

My first blog will be about how Sarah Palin in SO NOT a fashionista. I wish people and the media would stop saying that. Her hair is circa 1990 and her family looks like basic middle americans that go to the mall. NO STYLE THERE!!! ha ha ha

I will rant about that more later.

The heart ask pleasure first; and then excuse from the pain. Emily Dickinson

"What is it? My Dear?"

" Ah how can we bear it?"
" This. For so short a time. How can we
sleep this time away?"

"We can be quiet together, and pretend-since it is the beginning-that we have all the time in the world'

"And everyday we shall have less. And then none"

"Would you rather, therefore, have had nothing at all?"

"No. This is where I have always been coming to. Since my time began. And when I go away from here, this will be the mid-point, to which everything ran, before, and from which everything will run. But now, my love, we are here, we are now, and those other times are running else where."

A.S. Byatt Possessions

These two passages moved me in an way that I began to feel healed. Especially the last paragraph by Byatt. Time is just time. Had I read The Time Travelers Wife before Jonathan died I would have read this at his memorial service. I read it over and over and over again. As if it was from him and imagine he and I having that conversation. When I reach the last question, Would you rather, therefore, have had nothing at all?", I say no and give thanks to God that I have had love in many ways. Some people go a lifetime without ever being loved or falling in love. Jonathan could have too.

Sticky Icky Inquiry

One of my friends from college did this and so now I will too. I love asking and getting asked these questions. They aren't hard to answer and a few were funny. Everybody is already thinking about these topics but they are often too much for "polite" company. I'm glad my friends can take it for what it is, thoughts, questions, and answers. I bet asking these sticky questions at your next wine night will make your guest more passionate and you will all learn about each other. Learning and accepting is what the world is about and why God made us all so diverse.

1.Would you do meth if it was legalized? nope

2.Abortion: for or against? PRO CHOICE!!! Until EVERY man makes sure he has a condom and takes a proactive part in birth control. Remember Men make the laws that control a woman's body. Use your voice.

3.Would our country fall with a woman president? No. But a woman, not a woman trying to be a "man".

4.Do you believe in the death penalty? You kill you die. Someone killed someone I love. I feel most days he should not be allowed to open his eyes or eat.

5.Do you wish marijuana would be legalized already?Yes. People would be so much nicer to each other.

6.Is it really worse than alcohol? People get violent and black out when they get drunk. Pee themselves, crash cars, brawl in bars, rape and so on. People who smoke pot usually sit in one place and giggle.

7.Are you for or against premarital sex? everyone chooses that for themselves

8. Do you believe in God? God, Jesus, the whole thing.

9.Do you think same sex marriage should be legalized? No. I am all for gay and lesbians but their marriage needs to be different from mine. But they should have all the legal rights.

10.Do you think its wrong that so many Hispanics are moving to the USA? Uh weren't they here first? It's wrong to live in America and not speak English, no matter what country you come from. Americans should know conversational language with regards to the country they in. I hear all the time from Europe to Canada, English speaking American get no love.

11. A 12 year old girl has a baby... should she keep it? That is for her and her family to decide. I would talk my own daughter into abortion not adoption.

12.Should the alcohol age be lowered to 18? It should be raised to 23.

13.Should the war in Iraq be called off? Until every American have running whether, electricity, and basic food needs met then America doesn't need to be anywhere but in America.

14. Assisted suicide is illegal... do you agree? If someone wants to die and they are sick then let them die peacefully. I have seen what suicide can do to a family and those that discover their newly departed. Its no fun.

16.A mother is declared innocent after murdering her 5 children in a temporary insanity case.Do you agree? See question 4.

17.Are you afraid others will judge you from reading some of your answers? Afraid? lol. I hope someone does judge me. Thats on them. I'm black I am always judged, BRING IT ON!!! lol. =)

In the news

Why do children as young as 2 yo need to be put on cholestrol medication?
I saw a family the parents were well 300 lbs and the aughter was a little chubby and they had 4 of the biggest slurpees I have ever seen. In no world does a child, need 20 oz of sugar water at 9:30 am.

The Joy Of What?

At about 12:30 am this morning my good friend ShellEy and I enjoyed one of our end of the week marathon catch up calls. ShellEy and her husband just bought a house (we are thrilled that we will be exactly 6.2 miles away from each other as opposed to 20) and are planning a housewarming party. We talked about food, wine, and my obsession with The Joy Of Cooking...

This is how the convo went...
Sorrelle: Do you have the The Joy Of Cooking?
Shelley: Yes I do. I like it.
Sorrelle: It has some cool stuff...
long pause
Shelley: yea it does...wait...do I have the joy of cooking? pause Wait, no! I have The Joy Of Sex!

I don't know what that girl is doing in her kitchen but she makes amazing dishes.

My Name is Shaw Puhallic and I have a confession

Back when I lived in LA I spent a lot of time at Scribners near my job. One day I found a book that suited me to a T. It was Called Confessions Of A Shopaholic. For the past half decade I have found a kindred sprit in Rebecca Brandon nee Bloomwood. I have found her smart and savvy and a slave to all good fashion. She is how I learned of TopShop and Josephs.
When news broke last year it was being turned into a movie I was elated. When US had a photo from Isla Fisher on set in some crazy outfit I was floored. Becky Brandon would not approve not in the least. The frock she had on was like a circus tightrope walker on acid, poufy, tacky and not chic. Its as if they are making her Carrie Bradshaw and only SJP can do CB.
From that one picture I am saddned and deflated. Isla fisher is not Becky Brandon, and Becky Brandon was not tacky. I still might see it. I'll wait for the trailers and pray not to have a seizure from flashes of bright fabric and bad outfits.

Rock On Mr President

I went into a store for a lollipop and came out with the new issue of RollingStone. The cover grabbed my attentiion. I wouldnt have recognized the mag if it wasn't for its unique shape. The cover...well the cover...ITS @&^$*#! AWESOME!!! No words. Just Obama, looking so handsome, against a white background. Who ever decided to leave bylines off the cover is a genius. I couldn't find a pic online so go grab it.

As a 1930s wife, I am
Average

Take the test!

I had a feeling I will be an amazing domestic Goddess.

McDreamy

I love to sleep and I love to dream even more. Every so often I have dreams about Jonathan and he ask me things like" how I have been holding up?" and "whats new with myself". Then we will tell each other how we miss each other and then hug and he will say goodbye and he will be back soon. I always wake up happy and refreshed from those dreams. But no, the dream I had last night or this morning sent my heart racing.

Lucid dreams, awareness, and using all my senses is how I dream. Reading often takes places as does tasting. Those are good. Losing my physical capacity in dreams scares the heck out of me. It happens. Losing sight in one eye, not being able to run quickly, trying to talk and nothing comes out and so on. Last night ( in my dream) I found myself taking a group of friends to a place I had only dreamt about. Explaining our course of action was hard because I was losing little details and I couldn't let on I had only been in this place once before and it was in a dream.
To revisit places, that don't exist in reality, in a dream is one of those pleasures. While having last nights dream I remembered the feeling and satisfaction I had when I dreamed this place a year ago.

Does anyone dream like this?

So I Thought I Could Dance

I have just picked myself up off the ground...
I always dance when watching SYTYCD. This evening was no different. By the 3rd couple I am on my feet and moving.
A pirouette
A fouette
And an attitude turn
Caught my foot in the pulley of my blinds
Knocked the blinds from their ceiling hook
Standing on one leg, well hopping
hop
hop
hop
Crash
Blinds and all
I am too old for this.
I am crawling away from my computer now.

Why go straight when you can Veer.

The coolest website. This totally reminds me of some stores I used to go to in LA when I lived close to Santa Monica. I adore random artsy stuff. I am not very Pottery Barn. Actually, EVERYTHING looks like Pottery Barn. Even Target.

Ring Me Later

I woke up this morning with Abbies wedding ring on. I know, crazy. Its fun to wake up in new diamonds. She hasn't asked for the lovely ring, which looks so good on my center finger, on my right hand. Later I popped over to work to try on my sisters engagment ring with Abbies band. Killer combo. After all that realized I was missing my very own diamond ring. Its out for repair. I miss my BFF!

Oldie But Goody!

HERE IS AN OLDER BLOG FROM MYSPACE. ENJOY!!!

Talk Nerdy To Me
I have always LOVED nerdy boys.
Scott Aponte, Matt Halloway, Stuart Gebhart, David Mishook to name a few.
I still do. In college there was one boy Danny hot.
Graphic designer for video games. Wore mismatch socks. So cool. So smooth. So smart.
I loved their calculator watches, they way they dressed, and what they talked about.
My dad is an engineer.
My cousin is MichaelDorn aka Warf from Star Trek.
I love being in the same room as NASA scientists. I know 3 quite personally. It's always fun. I ask a lot of questions.
When my boyfriends dad and I would cook he always made it science. Thanks Gary!
So the fact that there is a TV show entirelly devoted to these Nerdy Intellectuals puts me in the mood.
As soon as Big Bang Theory comes on I am so giddy.
It's porn for me.
I cant stop laughing.
Sheldon and the little Jewish boy are my favorites.
My heart races at 8:25 thinking just 5 more minutes
I don't watch a lot of TV but I break for them.
Then suddenly its over and I count down the days and hours until next Monday.
God Bless Nerdy Boys!

Time Out!

I will update my blog soon. A month is a long time. I have a few drafts from May. I didn't have the heart or energy to publish. It would mean facing realities that I tried to out run all month. For the second year in a row May:1, Sorrelle:0. Ugh! I ripping may out of all calendars.

Jet Black...as im writting this im listenting to New Editon 'Would you love me'

This was written June 3rd.

When I was a girl there are a few this I wanted.

1. To marry Kris Smith from the duo Kriss Kross.

2. To be a Jet Beauty Of The Week.

3. To be short and curvy like Six from Blossom.

For a little black girl growing up in the 80s isnt like today. there are so many black women in news media education and so on a young black girl has a lot she can see herself in. So I would look to Ebony, Jet, and Essence . Jet always had a Beauty of the week and she was more often than not chocolaty and bodified. I wanted to be her. I was never tall enough to be a model but I tried. ha ha ha

Kriss Smith was a totally cute boy and as of lastnight after reading about his coffee table book of art, poems and lyrics I once again have a celebrity crush. I went to bed feeling about him like the girls I see tripping for the Jonas Bros.

I wanted to be short and curvy. If you have seen totaly old shool disney cartoons. The ones from the 40s that were silent but full of swing and jazz. The girls were always large in the chest, small in the waist and big on the bottom. At the age of 5 I knew how I wanted my body to be. My mom and maternal Grandmother are tall and pear shaped. No bra required. I don't think I have ever seen them in one in my life. All of a sudden I grew up and I was short and curvy like one of those Disney cartoons.

I may have not gotten the first two but atleast I am happy with my body.

To Celebrate You

Tomorrow is the birthday of someone dear to my family and I . An amazing person for which I am and was forever changed the moment we met. It is true that love changes you. Not for the fact that we were in love but best friends who truly liked each other and hanging out together and making dreams come true side by side.

All the songs he taught me on his bass. I was his worst student. But I LOVE when he would let me jam with him and how he would just high 5 me and smile. Like he was proud. The concerts and music festivals we went to . The shows he was in. I always dreamed of having a musician husband. He would blow kisses to me from stage, wink, or give " the smile". Never wanting to feel like a groupie I was often seen toting his bass bag on my back in stilettos and dresses. Sitting next to Wyclef Jean and watching him play. And then hanging out with Wycelf a bit after the show. SOOOOO FUN!!! Thanks Babes. My private concerts. For this one moment again I would trade a millions of others... I used to sit on my knees backwards on our couch and he would sit behind the couch and play back for me for hours on ends. Some nights I would sit and other nights I would do ballet on the hardwood floors and as he played he would watch, and as I danced I would watch him. He said I reminded him of Moonlight Sonata... We would imagine our Afro haired babies rocking out backstage at a show. Once he said "When he plays the Hollywood Bowl I would be front and center". I knew then he was in it for life. His favortie Beach Boys song was " God Only Know", I can barely listen to it. We loved each other and each others art.

We sort of grew up together. A person changes a lot between 21 and 27. We had experiances that changed and challened us as individuals. We managed to keep growing together but never in eachs others shadow. He was quiet. Not dumb or uninterestiing. Just quiet. He did not waste time with small talk with anyone. Not that he was rude he just wasnt about face or false pretense. Jonathan was so loyal.

We had started looking at rings. I would show him the things I thought were cute. We went to Tiffany a few years before. And I sent a few emails from Tiffany as well. He like and approved my choice. But he still would see me looking and remind me that I like tension set too. He was a sweet man. I was excited. It was a matter of when and where.

The week leading up to his death I called him everyday several times a day and told him that I just needed him to know how much I missed him and that I would be back up north in a few weeks. I tried to get him to come down here and he tried to get me to go up there. In the end we decided that a couple weeks wasnt that bad. We were going to napa for my bday.

***I began to write this a May 14th. I needed a way to celebrate his life and our love. This is incomplete and most like nonsensical but it had to get out. ***

Say Wrong, So Wrong, Sarong

It was hot. I put on a sarong and my bikini and did some gardening in the afternoon. Around 2 my pal Margo stopped by. I gave her a new bikini and a sarong and into the back yard we went. After all 48 of my new flowers were in the ground Margo and I enjoyed a beer, some fun music, and the hammock at the top of the trees in my backyward. You can see the top of the trees and below the wall behind us in a 15 foot drop that leads to an acre behing our house. No its not ours.
As we relaxed on the hammock sharring a bowl of mandrin oranges in our bright garb my mother came to the window and said what a pretter picture. Margo broke out the camera phone and this is some of what was taken. We took pics and giggled like school girls. Thankful to be off work so early and to enjoy the first sun of the season. We talked about my bbq this weekend and who would be falling down, who was comming and so on.

While the sun set I asked Margo to be quiet so we could hear the night birds and other noises with out the rush hour cocaphany. Living behind UCR we see lots of traffic. After a few rustles and me saying " look, can you see it climbing?" Margot took of for the other patio on the other side of the house. She wouldnt even go back with me to get my stuff. Sorry margo. No more hammock at night. Its common to be at my house and encounter all sorts of wildlife. Snakes, toddler sized racoons, Skunks on Family night, Roadrunners, pregnant lizards, humming birds (in the house and our plants), and the always fun Coyote.
All in all it was a blessed evening between two people who knew each other as girls and became friends as women. Thanks fun Margo! Grrr

My Secret Garden

Most Afternoons you can find me in my backyard listening to old jazz and working in my garden. There is nothing more satisfying to me than digging in the the brown earth and watching delicate foliage break through.

At a time in my life when more and more friends move towards marriage and motherhood ,while I am single for the first year in 6 years, I tell myself I haven't given birth but I can give life. Giving life to these living, breathing, organisms leaves me in such awe of Gods ability to create such beautiful works. I begin to feel more connect to the world. As if, when flowers dig roots I too dig roots.

Going to my local Nursery ( Park View) and picking seeds or flowers always excites me. I choose carefully and contemplate height, how the plant will spread, and always the shape, color, and texture of foliage. Seeds vary in size sometimes almost microscopic (chamomile) and other times large (morning glory). I enjoy starting from seeds the process is more involved and exciting. After planting the seeds the waiting is hard the first few days. I peek out side to see if something have sprouted. Nothing sprouts in 24 hours but I check anyway. (Its like a childhood December all over again. The first few days you are all excited then excitement wanes and gives way to forgetting then all of a sudden its Christmas). A few weeks go by and suddenly there is a definitive live of fresh seedling. It is so sweet to watch them grow.

As the sun precedes the twilight and gives the sky a lilac tinge. I pour a glass of wine and sit. I sit quiet and I relish the colors running towards me from the ground. Yellow Snapdragons. Orange, yellow and hot pink Gerber daisy. Red standard rose bush (tree). Pink Hollyhocks. Red strawberries scurrying across the ground dropping white petals behind them. Crimson and Clover. Over and over. Rocco red Ronocculus. And so much more. Silvery eucalyptus towering over my head. The Iris' that happen to be purple and gold. They look like 70 Laker fans tailgating. I can always hear myself exhale as I thank God for his perfection and majesty in my backyard. The perfection of Iris' Van Gogh merely imitates.

Cardinal Fashion Rule #1

ALL CLOTHING IS NOT MADE THE SAME!!!
Because you are a 12 in one brand DOES NOT MEAN YOU ARE A 12 IN ALL BRANDS.
Open your mind to adjusting sizes due to:
  • FABRIC. heavy wovens and linens are to be loose. Knits should be loose.
  • SILLOUETTE ( items with darts or empire waist, tent shapes, babydoll, pencil skirts, oxford shirts, tailored items, ect)
  • CUT If a garment is cut on the bias ( you might have to go up 2 sizes)
  • Color. Bright colors should skim the body, dark can be snug. Still leaving breathing room.
  • Chest. IF the garment is too snug in the chest but fits properly elsewhere GO THE NEXT SIZE UP and tailor the rest to fit.
  • Hem. If you wear a very mini mini its ok to let it be one size larger. Allow the waist band to gently rest on the lower waist. If an item looks a little loose on the body the overall effect is slimming. It the proportion. If its a dress allow the thighs to float within the skirt.

Support You Local Arts

In the wake of crazy gas prices, wars, and no world peace support your local arts. Every town big or small has some sort of art.Riverside is home to some of the most amazing artist and artisans. So why go to LA or San Diego when you can hang in Riverside at some amazing places that hardly cost a thing.
  • Downtown Riverside Arts Walk. Every 1st Thursday of the month.
  • Riverside Ballet has a Spring Gala going on next month.
  • The Historic Citrus park hold concerts that I believe are free in the Summer.
  • Back To The Grind coffee house has a gallery below them and also offers concerts.
  • Riverside Community College always put on great plays.
  • Mission Tobacco Lounge have great live music and dancing Thursday through Saturday I believe.
  • Riverside Monthly has a few notes on the activitys during the month.
  • There are also several galleries in the Downtown are.

Get out there, support your locals arts, and boost the local economy by supporting the small guy. Also shop the many amazing boutiques and gift shops. There is always something amazing to discover that you wont find at the Galleria.

Getting It On

Getting dressed is so hard when I am tired. My closet consist of a "uniform" which makes it easier, faster, and gives me a more pulled together look even if its jeans and a T shirt. I will share a few ideas and tricks that make dressing and shopping a little easier. All day I dress, coach, and style women and their closets this is what they tell me "I want to look more polished, pulled together, fresher, fun" and this is what I tell them...

  1. KNOW YOUR BODY!!! Take the time to really understand what you are shaped like. EVERY body has some amazing parts.
  2. It does not matter if you are a 2 or a 22 confidence matters most
  3. Too tight and too sung is ofter too unflattering on anyone. THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR MUFFIN TOP! Especially if you are under a size 12. A proper fit is your best friend.
  4. THONG panties and knits do mix. I don't know how many times I see a woman with a jiggle tush. ITS NOT CUTE. I know you don't want VPLs but a wobbly behind is more unattractive. PS. If you see pantie lines your clothes are too tight. LOOK AT YOURSELF FROM BEHIND!!! Behind the front is important.
  5. Natural fabrics and solid colors are key. A couple patters in key pieces( jackets, blouse, shoes, purse) are good. Only a few patterns per season. Patterns are to punch up and kicks and flair. Use the same pattern principal for hot seasonal colors.
  6. Do not hate the models. I love them. I am a size 10. They need to be that small for a few reason. Samples need to be small. A designer doesn't want to waste fabric on something that wont sell. Hence, the teeny tiny samples you see for the models to wear in print ads and in shows. Its about being cost effective.
  7. This spring and summer make sure you have some grays and anything you would see in an 8 pack of Crayola Crayons.
  8. Build your wardrobe foundation on classic pieces, then add the modern classic and finally the trends. Explaining this will take another blog.
  9. Always update your make up and hair. AVOID fad cuts if you don't have time for the maintenance. Frosted lipstick died 20 years ago. The new pinks are gorgeous, creamy and soft. Try YSL and Mac. Don't get the Posh cut. Once you see 5 people in you local town with it you know its time to move on. Same with clothes, accessories and logo purses.
  10. As for purses, INVEST in one great leather bag WITHOUT a name or a logo. Especially if it is your only bag. You will look so much more together and fashionable. Coach and Dooney and Burke do make solid leather. Hayden Panettiere has a great line she did for D & B.

#2

I am not rich I am not poor. Thank God he blesses me with daily bread and then some.

To live in CA, well southern CA you must have a car. If you don't have a car you need a Vespa and a job close to home. To be a housekeeper or nanny you must have a car. That's what the classifieds say. With gas at $4.17 a gallon and LA County MTA wanting to cut over 30 lines what are the poor to do.

Right now before my little eyes I am imagining the great divide between rich and poor. We have only heard about it but it happening. What happens when gas is 6 bucks a gallon and someone makes $15 an hour? Only the rich will be able to afford gas. Which mean only the wealthy will be able to afford to drive to work and will fill all positions from mail boy to the few corner offices above the glass ceiling.

Thankfully there is a Starbucks or Coffee Bean on EVERY corner. For the rich and poor. Close enough for everyone to walk to . Some for a drink and some for work.

I do not know the purpose of my blog but I will let it unfold an organically as possible.
Deep within myself there is a space that longs to share so its known we are all the same. My experience ,your experience, our joy, frustration, happiness. It may not be the same if familiar, but the goal of Self is to grow, learn, share, fail, succeed, merge and love.

Hopefully a few people will draw something from what is shared here as I have from other people. Not how to live or how to do it right or wrong. Take from my blog a snippet of a view, my perspective about whatever I post. Its just a perspective and everyone has more of those that dollars in the bank. quotes of life
